Statement of “PRORIV!” in connection with Day of Slavic language and culture

Every year on the 24^th of May in all Slavic countries people solemnly glorify Saint Cyril and Methodius, the authors of the Slavic alphabet.

Slavic alphabet was created in the IX century, in about 862. Cyril and Methodius were Orthodox monks and they created the Slavic alphabet in a Greek monastery. A new alphabet was named “Cyrillic alphabet” after the Byzantine Constantine, who became a monk and got the name Cyril. His brother Methodius helped him.

Cyril created the Slavic alphabet on the basis of the Greek alphabet, but it was essentially changed to reproduce the Slavic phonetic system. Two alphabets were created- Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets. Cyrillic alphabet became the cultural basis of Slavdom.

International Youth Corporation and People’s Democratic Party “PRORIV!” congratulates everybody, who considers the Days of Slavic language and culture to be a celebration. Today we remember the authors of the Cyrillic alphabet, thus, we turn to our ancestry. We feel the commonness of the Slavic world, its indissoluble bounds with Orthodoxy, through Byzantium the connection with Rome, and through Rome with antique civilizations. This helps us to understand the great role of Slavdom in the world’s history.
